Most walk-in shower installations cost around £2,100 to £2,500 excluding VAT, Checkatrade says, and £2,100 is the £1,500 average for the walk-in shower plus £600 for installation. An installed walk-in shower enclosure typically includes the shower tray, the screen, the plumbing connections and the labour, while premium fixtures, bespoke glass or upgraded tiling cost more.

In a whole new bathroom, shower installation costs £250 to £750, around £500, and shower enclosure installation £350 to £800, around £575, on Checkatrade’s figures.

Replacing a bath with a walk-in shower

Replacing a bath with a walk-in shower costs around £2,500 excluding VAT, Checkatrade says, depending on plumbing alterations, new tiling or flooring, the shower type, and waste and drainage adjustments. Replacing an existing shower enclosure with a walk-in unit is typically cheaper than taking out a bath.

Electric, power and mixer shower costs

A standard electric shower costs around £400 supplied and installed, depending on the wiring, Checkatrade says. Electric showers may need electrical work, while mixer and power showers rely on the water pressure and hot water system already in the home.

Electricians charge around £45 to £60 an hour and plumbing labour typically costs around £50 an hour, on Checkatrade’s figures. Installing a new circuit for a shower is notifiable electrical work, and an installer registered with a competent person scheme can self-certify that it complies with the building regulations, the Planning Portal says.

What a walk-in shower quote includes

A walk-in shower quote typically covers installing the shower tray or enclosure, the plumbing connections, installing the drainage and waste pipe, fitting the shower screen, and basic sealing and waterproofing, Checkatrade says. Some quotes include tiling and minor electrical work as well.

Full retiling, replacing the flooring, structural alterations, electrical upgrades for new circuits and decorative or premium fittings are often charged separately, according to Checkatrade. Describe the job the same way to every fitter, down to the tiling, the flooring and who takes the bath away, so each quote prices the same work.

What changes the price of a walk-in shower

The shower type, the bathroom layout, taking out a bath, the tiling and finishing, and any electrical work all change the price, Checkatrade says. A new layout can mean moving the plumbing or reinforcing the floor, taking out a bath means labour and disposal, and an electric shower can need wiring or circuit upgrades.

To keep the cost down, keep the shower where the plumbing already is, choose a standard-size tray and screen, avoid major layout changes and compare quotes, Checkatrade advises.

Fitting a walk-in shower yourself is rarely a good idea without plumbing experience, Checkatrade says.

Walk-in shower or wet room

A walk-in shower holds the water in with a tray and a glass screen and is generally the cheaper choice, while a wet room waterproofs the whole floor with level drainage and needs more structural work, Checkatrade’s walk-in shower guide says. A wet room costs around £5,000 to £13,000 on Checkatrade’s figures.

A straightforward walk-in shower takes 1 to 3 days to fit, and converting a bath takes 3 to 7 days, Checkatrade says.
